Willem Maris

Willem Maris was a Dutch landscape painter associated with the Hague School, known for his rural scenes of fields, riverbanks and livestock. The third of three artist brothers, he practiced working outdoors from youth, honing animal anatomy and his observation of light by copying masters and through close contact with colleagues such as Anton Mauve. His work kept recurring subjects—meadows with willows, ditches, cows, ducks and chickens—but developed in three phases: detailed realism, a more saturated palette, and, around 1880, broader brushstrokes and heavier impasto. Maris was noted for his treatment of light; a maxim attributed to him was that he did not paint cows but rather effects of light. In contrast to the grayish tones of many contemporaries, his vivid colors and atmospheric effects earned him the nickname the “Impressionist” of the Hague School. He maintained a steady output throughout his life, influenced younger artists, and left a body of work centered on the luminous sensitivity of the Dutch countryside.
