William James Mayo was an American physician and surgeon recognized as one of the founders of the Mayo Clinic, an institution that became a global reference in integrated medicine and medical education. Graduating from the University of Michigan in 1883, he returned to Rochester, Minnesota, to work with his father and his brother Charles, playing an active role in the founding of Saint Mary’s Hospital and in the transformation of the family practice into the nonprofit institution formalized in 1919.
Across his career, Mayo was noted for his surgical practice, particularly in the management of gastric tumors, and for organizing large-scale medical services. During World War I he served as chief surgical consultant to the U.S. Army, helping prepare and train military physicians; for this service he received decorations and was promoted in the reserves.
His legacy includes not only clinical and surgical advances but also the institutional model of the Mayo Clinic, based on collaboration among specialists, teaching, and research. The house where he lived and his grave in Rochester are among the landmarks that preserve his memory.
