Willis Eugene Lamb Jr. was an American physicist noted for precisely identifying a shift in the energy levels of electrons in the hydrogen atom—the so-called Lamb shift—work that earned him the 1955 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Polykarp Kusch. His discovery played a decisive role in the development of quantum electrodynamics by revealing small corrections to the levels predicted by the classical theory. Trained in chemistry and holding a doctorate in physics from the University of California, Berkeley, Lamb moved between theoretical and experimental research throughout his career. He held professorships at institutions such as Columbia, Stanford, Oxford, Yale and the University of Arizona, where he was a professor of Physics and Optical Sciences until his retirement. Beyond his initial work on the Lamb shift, Lamb devoted himself to studies in nuclear theory, laser physics and the foundations of quantum measurement, and he was a critic of popular interpretations of the photon concept. His legacy includes not only scientific contributions central to modern quantum physics but also academic influence through teaching and awards that bear his name.
