Winnie Ruth Judd was an American medical secretary whose name became linked to one of the most sensationalized criminal cases of the 1930s. In October 1931, Judd was accused of murdering two friends, Anne LeRoi and Hedvig “Sammy” Samuelson; the bodies were transported in trunks and luggage from Phoenix to Los Angeles in an episode the press dubbed the “Trunk Murders.” Sensational newspaper coverage turned Judd into a controversial public figure, earning her nicknames such as “Tiger Woman” and “Blonde Butcher.”
At trial she was convicted of LeRoi’s murder and sentenced to death, a sentence later overturned when Judd was declared mentally unfit to stand trial. Committed to the Arizona State Asylum for the Insane, she escaped several times over three decades; after her final escape in the 1960s she lived under an assumed name until being released in 1971 and placed on parole, which ended in 1983.
The case prompted debate in the United States over the media, criminal justice, and capital punishment, and has continued to provoke controversy about possible third-party involvement in the killings. The episode remains notorious both for the brutality attributed to the murders and for its public and legal repercussions.
