Zoran Đinđić was a Serbian philosopher and politician who played a central role in Serbia’s democratic transition in the late 1990s and early 2000s. As a coauthor of the rearticulation of post‑communist liberalism, he helped found the Democratic Party in 1989 and became a member of parliament in 1990. As an opposition leader, he was decisive in mobilizing resistance to Slobodan Milošević’s regime and in the Democratic Opposition of Serbia coalition’s victory in the 2000 elections.

Appointed mayor of Belgrade in 1996, Đinđić was the city’s first non‑communist mayor since World War II, and in January 2001 he became prime minister of Serbia. In government he pursued a pro‑Western agenda and economic reforms aimed at modernizing the country, and he supported the extradition of Milošević to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.

His determination to pursue reforms and to tackle organized crime provoked strong domestic resistance. Đinđić was assassinated in March 2003, an event that profoundly affected Serbian politics and cemented his reputation as a proponent of European integration and democratic reform.
