Proclamation of independence based on the historian Rocha Pombo, 1961 edition, Melhoramentos, which is one of the best published to date; he was a very honest, indefatigable historian and a great patriot:

The messengers arrived in São Paulo on September 7; and knowing that the Prince had gone to Santos, they proceeded without delay on their march there and went to meet the Honor Guard, which was resting at the Ipiranga. Informed that His Highness could not be far, they went to meet him. It must have been about four-thirty in the afternoon (on a beautiful Saturday; it should be borne in mind that the clocks of the time often ran slow or fast). About half a league from the Ipiranga, Bregaro and Cordeiro met the Prince and handed him the correspondence. His Highness read the dispatches there on the spot, seeming moved; and then, affecting calm, as one who meditates in anguish, he handed the papers to his aide, saying something in a low voice. Then, in a broad movement of soul, he cried aloud: "We must put an end to this!" He spurred his horse, and at a great gallop advanced toward the place where the retinue was. The sentinel cried to arms; the guard formed hastily and presented arms. And to all those people in astonishment D. Pedro exclaimed: "Comrades! The Cortes of Lisbon really want to enslave Brazil; therefore it is necessary to declare its Independence now. We are definitively separated from Portugal!" And raising his sword, in a challenge of enthusiasm he shouted with all the strength of his robust lungs: "Independence or Death!" This cry was many times repeated by everyone, as in a fit of delirium, and resounded — one might say — throughout the entire country.
