George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, was an English aristocrat whose influence extended beyond noble circles through his role as a patron of Egyptology. He inherited the title in 1890 and, already married to Almina Wombwell, devoted part of his fortune and attention to excavations in Egypt, particularly after establishing temporary residence there for health reasons. From 1907 he became the patron of Howard Carter, funding archaeological campaigns in the Valley of the Kings that culminated in 1922 with the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb — one of the most significant finds in modern archaeology because of the treasures and the state of preservation of the burial chamber. Carnarvon took part directly in the opening of the tomb and in the initial management of the finds. His sudden death in Cairo in 1923 fueled legends about an alleged “curse,” although contemporary accounts point to plausible medical causes. Carnarvon’s legacy remains associated with the financial and logistical support that made possible a landmark for the history of ancient Egypt and for the popularization of Egyptology in the twentieth century.
