Aajonus Vonderplanitz was an American alternative nutrition activist known for advocating raw-food diets with an emphasis on raw meat and unpasteurized dairy. Calling himself a pioneer of the so-called "primal diet," he published We Want to Live in 1997 and founded the nonprofit Right to Choose Healthy Foods (RTCHF), which organized clubs and legal strategies to obtain access to raw milk. Throughout his activity he promoted dietary protocols that had not been validated by the medical community and made claims of cures without published clinical documentation, drawing strong controversy even among proponents of alternative therapies. His activism also involved legal actions and maneuvers such as the arrangement known as "animal leasing," used to circumvent bans on the sale of unpasteurized dairy products. In the 2000s, RTCHF came to support dozens of food clubs in the United States and played a central role in overturning the ban on the sale of raw milk in Los Angeles County. Internal conflicts and public disputes, including controversies with the Rawesome club, marked his later years and contributed to his notoriety within the food-rights movement. Vonderplanitz died in 2013 in Thailand. His legacy remains divisive: he is remembered for legal and organizational activism to increase access to raw foods while his therapeutic claims and methods remain without scientific support.
