Abe Silverstein was an American aerospace engineer whose career played a central role in developing the United States’ space capabilities during the Cold War. A graduate in engineering from the Rose‑Hulman Institute of Technology, he joined the NACA — the organization that became NASA — where he distinguished himself in wind tunnel design and aerodynamic propulsion research, contributing to advances in turbojet engines and supersonic flight.

As a manager at the Lewis Research Center and later at NASA headquarters, Silverstein led technical teams crucial to the Ranger, Mariner, Surveyor, Voyager and especially Apollo programs; he is credited with adopting the name “Apollo” for the lunar program. He also chaired the Saturn Vehicle Evaluation Committee (the Silverstein Committee) and oversaw development of the Centaur upper stage.

His early advocacy for using liquid hydrogen in upper stages of launch vehicles proved decisive for the Saturn V, a stance that prompted debates with Wernher von Braun but ultimately proved crucial to the success of the lunar missions. After retiring from NASA he worked in industry and received honors such as the Guggenheim medal and induction into the National Aviation Hall of Fame.
