Penny Singleton, born Marianna Dorothy McNulty, was an American actress and labor leader whose professional career spanned six decades. She became widely known for playing Blondie Bumstead in a series of 28 films between 1938 and 1950 and in the radio adaptation of Blondie, which ran from 1939 to 1950. She also provided the voice of Jane Jetson in the animated series The Jetsons (1962–1963), ensuring a lasting presence in both film and television popular culture. Before her film fame, Singleton began performing as a child in silent movie theaters, vaudeville, and Broadway productions. Her versatility included nightclub performances, roadshows, and appearances in films such as After the Thin Man and Go West, Young Lady, establishing her as an active presence on stage and screen. Beyond her artistic career, she was prominent as a union activist. She was elected president of the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA) in separate terms and led notable union actions, including testifying before a Senate subcommittee in 1962 about the situation of women in entertainment and leading strikes for better working conditions. In recognition of her career, she received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for both radio and motion pictures, leaving a legacy defined by the combination of artistic success and advocacy for entertainment workers.
