Bobby Short was an American singer and pianist associated with repertoire from the first half of the 20th century, notable for performing and preserving the so-called Great American Songbook. A specialist in composers such as Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen and Rodgers & Hart, he also highlighted and elevated African American composers of the same era — among them Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and James P. Johnson — treating their works as natural counterparts to the popular canon.
A regular figure in Manhattan's cultural life, he built his career starting in Chicago clubs and salons and, above all, through decades-long residence at the Café Carlyle, where he became a musical institution. His practice included long, intimate performances that reinforced his image as an elegant, erudite interpreter of salon repertoire.
Author of memoirs recounting his time in nightclubs and his professional life, he also contributed to film and television soundtracks and made appearances on screen, maintaining continuous activity until the end of his career. He received institutional honors, including designation as a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, which attest to his legacy as a preserver and promoter of the American songbook tradition.
