Abel Jacob Herzberg was a Dutch jurist, historian and writer of Jewish origin, known for recording and interpreting the experience of Jews in Europe during the Second World War. Trained in law at the University of Amsterdam, he built a reputation as a lawyer and influential Zionist activist, holding leadership positions in youth organizations and in the national Zionist union of the Netherlands. Before the war he had already written plays and essays, and he worked as an intermediary between Jewish communities and the authorities under occupation. Interned with his wife in Bergen‑Belsen, his legal training earned him roles in the camp’s internal bodies; there he began keeping a diary he would later revise after liberation. Back in the Netherlands, he reconciled legal practice with intense literary activity: he published diaries, essays, historical texts and plays that make him one of the earliest Dutch historians and chroniclers of the Holocaust. His work blends personal testimony, historical analysis and ethical reflection on Jewish identity, assimilation and collective memory. He left a body of work that shaped Dutch understanding of the persecution of Jews and has maintained a significant presence in the historiography and testimonial literature of the period.
