Adolf Friedrich Johann Butenandt was a prominent German biochemist awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939 for his research on sex hormones, in particular the identification of estrone, progesterone and androsterone. His academic career included appointments in Göttingen, Danzig, Tübingen and Munich, where he established himself as one of the leading researchers in organic chemistry and biochemistry of the twentieth century. As director of an institute that later became part of the Max Planck Society, Butenandt led investigations ranging from plant toxins to pheromones; in 1959 he described and named bombykol, the sex pheromone of the silkworm moth. He headed the Max Planck Society from 1960 to 1972, a period in which he expanded the institution’s scientific reach and profile in postwar German research. His legacy includes fundamental contributions to endocrinology and steroid chemistry, together with an extensive scientific output and international recognition, including multiple honors and honorary doctorates. Butenandt’s career is also marked by ties and controversies related to Germany’s political context in the 1930s and during the war, topics that remain subject to historical assessment.
