Adolf Heusinger was a German military officer whose career spanned the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and the Federal Republic of Germany, and extended to NATO. Professionalized after the First World War, he rose to prominence on the Army General Staff, becoming Chief of the Operations Section of the OKH in 1940 and taking part in the planning of the campaigns against Poland, France and on the Eastern Front. In June 1944 he assumed the post of Acting Chief of the Army General Staff and was present at the assassination attempt on Hitler on 20 July, being wounded in the explosion and later interrogated, though he was never formally implicated in the plot.
In the postwar period he was detained and testified at the Nuremberg trials. From 1950 he served as an adviser to Konrad Adenauer and joined the bodies that created the defence of West Germany. With the founding of the Bundeswehr he returned to service, becoming the first Inspector General (1957–1961) and later President of NATO’s Military Committee (1961–1964).
His figure is controversial: Soviet accusations link him to anti‑partisan operations in the Soviet Union, and documents suggest a possible connection to clandestine ex‑military initiatives in the 1950s. He remains significant for his role in rebuilding the German armed forces and in Western military integration during the Cold War.
