Percy Bysshe Shelley was an English poet central to the Romantic movement, known both for his lyrical verses and for long poems and dramatic works. Among his best‑known texts are Ozymandias, Ode to the West Wind, To a Skylark and The Masque of Anarchy; his longer poems, such as Prometheus Unbound, Alastor and Adonaïs, solidified his critical reputation. He also wrote multi‑act plays, early gothic novels (Zastrozzi, St. Irvyne) and short stories, showing a wide interest in forms and genres. Shelley was notable for political and religious positions that were controversial in his time: he published atheistic pamphlets and works of strong social criticism, which led to his expulsion from Oxford and to conflicts with his family. His convictions influenced the circulation of texts like Queen Mab, which spread widely among reformist and labor movements. His circle included figures such as John Keats and Lord Byron; he married Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. Despite a relatively short life and personal conflicts, his influence on English poetry and on later political and literary currents remains significant.
