Maurice Richard was one of the greatest players in ice hockey history, an icon of the Montreal Canadiens and a leading figure in Canadian sport after World War II. An intensely competitive forward, he distinguished himself as a pioneering goal scorer: he was the first to score 50 goals in a season (1944–45) and the first to reach 500 career goals, finishing his career in 1960 with 544 goals. He won eight Stanley Cups, including a record five consecutive from 1956 to 1960, and received the Hart Trophy as MVP in 1947.

A leader on the ice, he played in 13 All‑Star Games and was named to end‑of‑season all‑star teams 14 times; he also served as the Canadiens’ captain in his final playing years. As a member of the famed “Punch Line” alongside Elmer Lach and Toe Blake, Richard helped shape the club’s offensive play and cemented his legend among Quebec’s francophone fans.

A cultural figure beyond sport, his suspension in 1955 sparked the so‑called Richard Riot, an event with strong social and symbolic resonance in the province. His importance was acknowledged with immediate induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame (1961), recognition from Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, and in 1999 the donation of the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy—awarded to the NHL’s regular‑season top goal scorer.
