Sir Adrian Cedric Boult was one of the most important English conductors of the 20th century, known for founding and consolidating symphony orchestras of international standing. After musical studies in England and Leipzig, he made his debut with ballet companies and held prominent posts, becoming conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1924. In 1930, as director of music at the public broadcaster, he founded the BBC Symphony Orchestra and served as its principal conductor, raising it to a standard of excellence in the United Kingdom. Boult played a central role in promoting British music, premiering and championing works by Holst, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Walton, Britten and others, while also introducing contemporary European composers such as Bartók, Stravinsky and Schoenberg to British audiences. After leaving the BBC in 1950, he led the London Philharmonic Orchestra, helping to restore that institution’s prestige. A reserved figure, Boult enjoyed a prolific recording career that spanned from 1920 to 1978, leaving a large discography and influencing subsequent generations of conductors. His legacy includes enduring recorded interpretations as well as an institutional influence on the establishment and standards of symphony orchestras.
