Adrian (Adrian Adolph Greenburg) was one of the most influential costume designers of Hollywood’s golden age, active primarily between 1928 and 1941 as chief designer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Credited on screen as “Dresses by Adrian,” he became known for his collaborations with stars such as Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow and Norma Shearer, creating looks that set trends—from the iconic padded shoulders in Letty Lynton to the celebrated evening gowns in The Women. His work covered more than two hundred productions, including lavish period costumes for films such as The Great Ziegfeld, Camille and Marie Antoinette, and his best-remembered contribution: the sequined shoes and garments in The Wizard of Oz. Adrian was exacting about materials and workmanship, working directly with manufacturers and seamstresses to ensure high-quality finishes. In 1941 he left MGM to found his own fashion house, later launching commercial collections that influenced American fashion during World War II. He returned to film only sporadically and, after a brief return to theater and Broadway, died in 1959, later receiving recognition for his contributions to stage and screen costume design.
