Adrienne Monnier was a central figure in Parisian literary life in the 1920s and 1930s, known as a bookseller, publisher and writer. In 1915 she founded the Maison des Amis des Livres in the Quartier Latin, a bookstore and lending library that became a meeting place for French and international writers, hosting readings, cultural exchanges and a welcoming atmosphere that helped nurture the modernist scene. Alongside the Anglo‑American bookseller Sylvia Beach, Monnier helped create a vibrant editorial ecosystem: in 1925 she launched the internationalist magazine Le Navire d’Argent, which published translations and experimental texts — including excerpts of Joyce and early translations of Anglo‑Saxon poets — and helped introduce authors such as Hemingway to French readers. Despite financial difficulties that forced the magazine to close, Monnier kept the bookshop open even during the Occupation, where it served as a cultural refuge. She later published the Gazette des Amis des Livres (1938–1940) and continued to work as an essayist, translator and literary mediator. Her legacy lies in promoting transnational literary dialogue and in demonstrating the public role a bookseller‑publisher can play in building a modern literary scene.
