Agostino Andrea Chigi was a banker and major patron of the arts during the Italian Renaissance, known for amassing vast wealth and for his central role in Rome’s cultural and political life. Heir to a banking family from Siena, he settled in Rome at the end of the 15th century, financing popes and monarchs — including Alexander VI — and controlling lucrative monopolies such as salt and alum, vital to the textile industry. Those commercial and credit activities made him one of the period’s most powerful economic figures. His influence reached into papal politics: he served as treasurer and notary of the Apostolic Chamber under Pope Julius, accompanied military campaigns, and negotiated diplomatic support on behalf of the Holy See. At the same time he devoted himself to artistic and literary patronage, protecting figures such as Pietro Aretino and gathering nearly all the leading personalities of the early 16th century under his aegis. Among his most famous commissions are works by Raphael — including the frescoes of the Villa Farnesina — and projects involving Peruzzi, Sebastiano del Piombo, Giulio Romano and others. The Villa Farnesina, his residence and place of business, remains as testimony to Chigi’s patronage and to his material legacy in Rome’s artistic landscape.
