Aimé Fernand David Césaire was a poet, playwright, essayist and political figure born in Martinique, recognized as a cofounder of the Negritude movement. Educated in Paris, he distinguished himself among young African and Afro‑Caribbean intellectuals and, in 1934, helped launch the journal L'Étudiant noir, where the concept of Negritude emerged as a critique of the cultural oppression of French colonialism. His poetic work, influenced by Surrealism and authors such as Rimbaud and Mallarmé, includes Cahier d'un retour au pays natal (1939) and collections that established his intellectual voice. He also published incisive essays, such as Discours sur le colonialisme, that denounced European racism and colonialism. In addition to his literary output, Césaire had a long political career: he was mayor of Fort‑de‑France and a deputy from 1945 to 2001, advocating greater autonomy and a progressive project for Martinique. His legacy spans literature, theatre and anti‑colonial thought, with works translated internationally and a lasting influence on postcolonial studies.
