Al Freeman Jr. was an American actor, director, and educator whose career spanned theater, film, and television over several decades. A lifelong member of The Actors Studio, he was noted for performances in socially engaged plays and classical repertoire, appearing in productions such as Slave/Toilet and Joe Papp’s stagings of Long Day's Journey Into Night and Troilus and Cressida. In film he appeared in My Sweet Charlie, Finian's Rainbow, and Malcolm X, and on television in prominent series including The Mod Squad, Kojak, and Maude. His most widely recognized role was police captain Ed Hall on the soap opera One Life to Live (1972–1987), for which he won the 1979 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor — the first African American actor to receive that award in the category. He also portrayed major historical figures, playing Malcolm X in the miniseries Roots: The Next Generations and Elijah Muhammad in the film Malcolm X, a performance that earned him a NAACP Image Award. In academia, Freeman served as artist-in-residence and later professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at Howard University, eventually chairing the department and directing productions at the university and the Vineyard Playhouse. His legacy includes the training of actors and the posthumous honor of having Howard University’s theater space renamed in his memory.
