Alain-Fournier, the pen name of Henri-Alban Fournier, was a French writer best known for a single novel, Le Grand Meaulnes (published in 1913). Educated in a school and literary milieu that included figures such as Jacques Rivière, he took part in Parisian intellectual life as a literary critic before becoming an assistant to the politician Casimir Perrier. His personal experiences, notably a platonic love for Yvonne de Quiévrecourt, inspired central characters in his work. Le Grand Meaulnes secured his reputation by shaping themes of nostalgia, youth, and loss into prose, becoming a classic of French literature and the subject of numerous editions and adaptations. Fournier also published poems, essays, and short stories gathered in Miracles, and left notes and an unfinished novel, Colombe Blanchet, which only became known posthumously. Mobilized at the outset of the First World War, he disappeared in combat and was officially declared dead in 1920; his body was identified and buried only in 1991. His early death and the mystery surrounding his disappearance helped build the myth around him, and his work remains a touchstone for its lyrical intensity and its evocation of a lost youthful world.
