Alain Poher was a prominent French politician in the postwar period, noted for a long parliamentary career and for serving as interim President of the Republic on two occasions (1969 and 1974). A centrist activist, he began in Christian Democracy and moved closer to currents of the Democratic Centre and the Centre of Social Democrats, strongly defending European integration — he served as President of the European Parliament from 1966 to 1969. A senator for more than four decades, Poher presided over the Senate from 1968 to 1992, becoming the longest-serving holder of that office in the Fifth Republic. As President of the Senate he assumed the head of state under the Constitution after De Gaulle’s resignation and after Pompidou’s death; in those brief interim terms he oversaw presidential elections and took measures affecting the neutrality of public broadcasting and the maintenance of order in Paris. Before his full parliamentary career he held administrative and local offices: he was Secretary of State in financial and naval portfolios, a member of the Resistance, and mayor of Ablon-sur-Seine for decades. Known for pragmatism and an ability to cooperate even with Gaullist opponents, he left a legacy of institutional stability and a commitment to European integration in twentieth-century French politics.
