Alain Robbe-Grillet was a French writer and filmmaker associated with the Nouveau Roman movement, which redefined literary narrative beginning in the 1950s. Trained as an agronomic engineer, he worked in several French colonies before devoting himself entirely to literature; his notable debut came with Les Gommes (1953), followed by novels such as Le Voyeur (1955) and La Jalousie (1957), works characterized by methodical descriptions, fragmented temporality, and an emphasis on the surface of objects at the expense of traditional psychology. A critic and theorist, he published Pour un Nouveau Roman (1963), a collection of essays that consolidated his formal proposals, and served as an editorial adviser at Les Éditions de Minuit for three decades. He also made his mark in cinema: he co-wrote the screenplay for L'Année dernière à Marienbad and directed his own films, bringing the same narrative experimentation to the cinematic field. Over the course of his career he received critical recognition and held academic and institutional positions, becoming an influential figure in French letters and leaving an aesthetic rupture that influenced contemporary narrative and literary theory.
