Alan LaVern Bean was a United States Navy officer, test pilot, aerospace engineer, NASA astronaut, and painter. Trained in aerospace engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, he served as a naval aviator and graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, experience that led to his selection as an astronaut in 1963 (Astronaut Group 3). He logged over 7,000 flight hours, including extensive jet and flight-test experience. As the lunar module pilot on Apollo 12 (November 1969), he became the fourth person to walk on the Moon, taking part in two lunar excursions that totaled more than seven hours on the surface. During that flight he helped restore telemetry after lightning struck the spacecraft shortly after launch, a critical action for the mission’s success. In 1973 he also flew on Skylab 3, the second crewed mission to the Skylab orbital station. After retiring from the Navy and NASA, Bean turned to painting, creating works that document lunar experiences and scenes related to the Apollo program, establishing himself as an artistic voice that preserved the memory of crewed lunar missions.
