Alan Leo, born William Frederick Allan (1860–1917), was an English astrologer, author, editor and popularizer whose work is often cited as a milestone in the modernization of Western astrology. A member and supporter of the Theosophical movement, he sought to reconcile concepts such as karma and reincarnation with astrological practice, using the Theosophical Society’s broad international network to publish and spread his ideas across Europe and the Americas.
Leo promoted a methodological shift: he moved away from predicting specific events and advocated readings focused on tendencies and the psychological traits revealed by the chart, influencing later generations and contributing to the predominance of character analysis over “event-oriented” astrology. He published influential works, including The Art of Synthesis, and edited specialist periodicals that helped revive public interest in the discipline.
Also active as a collector of astrological data and founder of the Astrological Lodge of London, he faced prosecutions for “fortune-telling” in 1914 and 1917, which led him to revise his approach in pursuit of greater legitimacy. His writings and editorial work shaped part of twentieth-century astrological practice and influenced artists and scholars interested in the symbolic correspondences of the planets.
