Alan Michael Sugar, Baron Sugar, is a British businessman whose name became associated with consumer electronics and mass entrepreneurship. He founded Amstrad in 1968 and built a company that popularized affordable electronic products and personal computers — including the CPC and PCW lines — and which, in the 1970s and 1980s, expanded production and capitalization through low‑cost industrial solutions. Amstrad played significant roles in the European computer and disk markets, although it suffered technical and commercial setbacks in the 1990s.
Beyond industry, Sugar was involved in football as chairman and shareholder of Tottenham Hotspur from 1991 to 2001, a period marked by controversial business decisions and a single trophy win. He also became a public figure on television as the host of the business-competition show The Apprentice since 2005, which reinforced his image as a “business chief” with the wider public.
In the political and institutional sphere, he was elevated to the House of Lords in 2009 and served as a bridge between government and the business community, acting as an adviser to promote business. His career is remembered for promoting low‑cost production models, for his media presence, and for an ambiguous legacy that combines business success with criticism of his management and corporate practices.
