Albert Gleizes was a French painter, theorist and philosopher, a central figure in the emergence of Cubism and a major influence on the so-called School of Paris. With Jean Metzinger he published Du «Cubisme» (1912), the first substantial treatise on the movement, and he took part in key groups such as the Section d'Or and the magazine Der Sturm, where his theoretical ideas found a wide reception, especially in Germany and within the Bauhaus circle. Artistically, Gleizes moved from early Impressionism and Divisionism to an increasingly geometric and analytical language, contributing to the development of a discourse on form and space that opposed formal investigation to the dominance of color. He exhibited at major shows — the Salons d'Automne and des Indépendants — and was among the artists who brought Cubism to public attention in 1911. Beyond painting, he devoted himself to writing and cultural organization: he founded and directed bodies such as Abstraction-Création, took part in the Abbaye de Créteil and published important theoretical works in the 1920s–1930s, including La Peinture et ses lois (1923) and Vers une conscience plastique (1932). His stay in New York and his institutional activism helped internationalize French modern art.
