Alberto Moravia, the pen name of Alberto Gastone Pincherle, was one of the most influential Italian novelists of the twentieth century. His work focuses chiefly on social alienation, modern sexuality and existential dilemmas, written in a precise, cool, analytical prose that diagnosed the malaise of the bourgeoisie. He rose to prominence in 1929 with Gli indifferenti (The Time of Indifference), which secured his place in contemporary realist fiction. Throughout his career several of his books were adapted for film, among them Il conformista (The Conformist), which served as the basis for Bernardo Bertolucci’s film, and La ciociara (Two Women), directed by Vittorio De Sica. Personal experience—especially a serious childhood illness and his confrontation with fascism—shaped both his themes and his political and intellectual stance, prompting him to alternate between realism and allegory to evade censorship. Moravia also played an important role as a journalist and editor: he founded literary magazines and served as president of PEN International from 1959 to 1962. His legacy lies in building a literature committed to social observation and to the idea that the writer assumes a moral and political stance when representing reality.
