Aleister Crowley was a British occultist and a leading figure in twentieth-century Western esotericism. A member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, cofounder of the A∴A∴ and later head of the O.T.O., he became known for formulating and promoting the religious philosophy called Thelema, whose chief maxim — “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law” — articulated his view of individual and spiritual liberty. His literary and ritual output includes treatises on magic, Qabalah and tarot, as well as the influential Book of the Law, adopted as sacred scripture by thelemites. He also worked as a poet, novelist, playwright and social critic, frequently confronting the moral and religious standards of his era. His public notoriety arose from both his esoteric practices and his transgressive conduct, which drew sensationalist coverage in the contemporary press. After his death, Crowley became a touchstone for musicians, writers and filmmakers, and for strains of modern occultism, influencing cultural and esoteric figures and movements across the twentieth century.
