Alex Olmedo (Alejandro Olmedo Rodríguez) was a tennis player born in Peru who later became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He rose to prominence in the late 1950s, winning two Grand Slam tournaments in 1959 — the Australian Championships and Wimbledon — and finishing runner‑up at the US Championships that same year, reaching No. 2 among amateurs in contemporary rankings. In 1960 he won the U.S. Pro Championships by defeating Tony Trabert.
Olmedo played a decisive role in the 1958 Davis Cup campaign, contributing the three points that secured victory for the United States; his participation, however, provoked controversy at the time over eligibility and nationality. A business graduate of the University of Southern California, he was also a two‑time NCAA champion (singles and doubles) in 1956 and 1958.
Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987, Olmedo spent decades teaching tennis in California, coaching pupils from the entertainment world among others. His career is remembered for a combination of major titles, national team performance, and later influence as a coach and instructor.
