Alexander Sutherland Neill was a Scottish educator and writer known for founding Summerhill School and for advocating a pedagogy grounded in freedom, child autonomy, and community self-government. After training at the University of Edinburgh and working as a teacher and journalist, Neill developed a critique of authoritarian discipline and adult coercion, arguing that learning arises from children’s intrinsic motivation. In 1924, on returning to England, he founded Summerhill, which attracted attention in the 1930s and especially among progressive and countercultural movements of the 1960s–1970s. His best-known work was the book Summerhill (1960), which became a touchstone for the free school movement and for critics of traditional educational methods. Neill published about 20 books over his lifetime, blending autobiographical accounts with pedagogical reflection; his first literary success was A Dominie’s Log (1915), based on his experience as a headmaster during the First World War. Neill’s legacy endures in discussions about children’s rights, autonomy in education, and alternatives to coercive school models.
