Alexandre Cabanel was a 19th-century French painter known for his academic work on historical, mythological and religious subjects, as well as portraits. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, he won the Prix de Rome in 1845 and lived at the Villa Medici until 1850, establishing a career closely tied to the official art circles of the Second Empire.

Author of emblematic works such as The Birth of Venus (Salon of 1863), immediately purchased by Napoleon III, Cabanel became one of the most commercially successful artists of his generation alongside Gérôme and Meissonier. His polished technique and classical compositions appealed to collectors and political patrons, earning him numerous prizes and honors, including high ranks in the Legion of Honor.

As a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts and a member of the Salon jury for decades, he played a central role in training artists and maintaining institutional academic standards. That position also put him at odds with emerging avant-garde movements: his activity within the Salon contributed to controversies that led to the creation of the Salon des Refusés.

Cabanel’s legacy survives in European and North American museums, where his classical compositions remain a reference for studying French academicism and the artistic tensions of the Belle Époque period.
