Alexandre Emile Jean Yersin was a Swiss-born physician and bacteriologist best known for discovering the bacillus that causes plague, now called Yersinia pestis. Trained and further schooled at leading European centers, he worked in Louis Pasteur’s laboratory and collaborated with researchers such as Émile Roux and Albert Calmette, contributing to the development of antitoxins and vaccines in the late nineteenth century. In 1894, during an epidemic in Hong Kong, he identified the etiological agent of plague under rudimentary laboratory conditions—an advance that had immediate impact on understanding and combating the disease. He also investigated the relationship between plague and rodent populations, proposing hypotheses about transmission routes that were later expanded by other scientists. Settling in Vietnam, Yersin combined clinical work, research, and agricultural experimentation: he introduced rubber and cinchona cultivation, founded an experimental farm, and helped establish the Hanoi Medical School, serving as its first director. He received scientific recognition in France and remained an emblematic figure in Vietnam, where his house became a museum and his legacy is commemorated in institutions and memorials.
