Alfred Kastler was a French physicist whose career had a deep impact on twentieth‑century atomic physics. Trained at the École normale supérieure, he investigated fluorescence and the interaction between light and atoms, culminating in 1950 with the development of “pompage optique” (optical pumping). This set of optical methods for studying hertzian resonances earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1966 and opened decisive paths for experiments in spectroscopy and atomic clocks.
Throughout his academic life he led research groups and laboratories, including the Laboratoire de spectroscopie hertzienne (later named for him and Jean Brossel), and trained notable pupils such as Claude Cohen‑Tannoudji. He also took on institutional roles: he presided over the Comité français d’optique, was a member of the Academy of Sciences, and coordinated the creation of the CNRS atomic clock laboratory.
Kastler was also a public figure engaged in pacifist and humanitarian causes. He opposed nuclear armament, took part in movements against the Vietnam War and in campaigns against hunger, and remained an activist for disarmament and civil rights until the end of his life. His legacy combines fundamental scientific contribution with civic commitment.
