Alfred Lichtenstein was a German expressionist writer whose work was noted for intense lyricism and grotesque humor. Trained in law, he began publishing poems in Berlin’s avant‑garde magazines and in 1913 released the collection Die Dämmerung (Twilight), which became his best‑known work. His writing blends satirical imagery and fantastic characters, often drawn from figures and colleagues within the expressionist circle.

In addition to poetry, he wrote prose that mocked both acquaintances and himself, approaching the tone of authors such as Alfred Jarry. Lichtenstein’s verse is marked by existential anguish and a bleak view of the world, traits that placed him among the significant names of emerging German expressionism.

The experience of the First World War shaped his final texts, in which predictions of death and despair in the face of the conflict appear. Despite a brief career, his critical, imagistic voice left a legacy recognized for its emotional intensity and its contribution to the development of literary expressionism in Germany.
