Leslie Van Houten is an American criminal known for her participation in the Tate–LaBianca murders in August 1969, crimes that marked the criminal history of the United States. A young member of the so-called Manson Family, she was convicted in the deaths of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca and was originally sentenced to death; that sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment when California temporarily abolished capital punishment. Born to a middle-class family in California, Van Houten joined the group led by Charles Manson in the late 1960s, a period when the community promoted countercultural ideals, drug use, and an apocalyptic ideology Manson called “Helter Skelter.” During the August 1969 attacks, she took a direct part in the crime that resulted in the LaBiancas’ deaths. Over decades, Van Houten had repeated parole requests denied and spent more than fifty years incarcerated; she was granted parole in 2023. Her case remains widely debated in discussions of criminal responsibility for young people recruited by cult leaders and in the public memory of the crimes committed by the Manson Family.
