Gretchen Whitmer is an American lawyer and politician, a member of the Democratic Party, known for serving as governor of Michigan since 2019. Before taking the state executive office, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives (2001–2006) and the state Senate (2006–2015), where in 2011 she became the first woman to lead the Senate Democratic caucus. A graduate in Communications and later in Law from Michigan State University, Whitmer began her political career advocating for education, health care, and environmental protection. In 2013 she received national attention when she disclosed having been a victim of sexual violence during a debate on reproductive rights, a stance that strengthened her work on policies for survivors and public health. In 2016 she served for six months as Ingham County prosecutor, reviewing office practices and prioritizing domestic and sexual violence cases. Elected governor in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, her administration prioritized legislation on health care and infrastructure. In 2020 she was the target of a foiled kidnapping plot by extremist groups, an event that raised her national profile. Whitmer also served as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee (2021–2025), consolidating influence within the party and remaining a central figure in Michigan politics and debates over state governance.
