Alfred von Tirpitz was a German admiral and statesman who played a central role in building the Imperial Navy at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. From the 1890s he transformed Prussia’s modest naval force into a worldwide navy, emphasizing battleships and doctrines designed to challenge British naval supremacy. That expansion significantly affected foreign policy and the naval arms races that defined the pre–First World War era. During the war, Tirpitz held command and leadership roles in the High Seas Fleet, but the fleet proved unable to break British maritime dominance. The Battle of Jutland was a tactical German success without decisive strategic consequences. Faced with the limitations of the conventional fleet, Tirpitz came to support unrestricted submarine warfare, a policy that helped bring the United States into the conflict. Removed from power in 1916, he never regained his political influence. Beyond his military career, he left writings and memoirs on naval strategy and German policy that influenced debates about sea power and Germany’s military course in the early 20th century.
