Alison Stewart Lurie was an American novelist and scholar, noted for her satirical humor and close attention to personal relationships within intellectual settings. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1985 for Foreign Affairs (1984), a work that exemplifies her interest in social comedy involving professors and complicated marriages. Her fiction often focuses on academic characters and university settings, linking her in tone to British writers such as Kingsley Amis and David Lodge.

In addition to her novels, Lurie produced an extensive body of criticism and essays, standing out for studies of children’s literature and for exploring the social meaning of clothing, as exemplified by The Language of Clothes (1981). She edited anthologies and wrote on folklore and autobiography, maintaining a dialogue between fiction and non‑fiction throughout her career.

A teacher and researcher, she taught at Cornell from 1970, where she became a full professor and later professor emerita, influencing generations through her courses in children’s literature and creative writing. She received awards and honors, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her personal papers are archived at Cornell, preserving her literary and critical legacy.
