Irene Papas was a Greek actress and singer whose career spanned more than five decades and included participation in over seventy films. She became internationally known for roles in productions such as The Guns of Navarone (1961), Zorba the Greek and Electra — the latter directed by Michael Cacoyannis — as well as Costa-Gavras’s Z. Her striking presence and powerful voice made her a leading figure in postwar Greek cinema and theatre. Political events also shaped her career: after the military dictatorship was imposed in Greece in 1967, Papas went into exile in Italy and New York, collaborating during that period with prominent European filmmakers such as Franco Zeffirelli and Franco Rossi. She returned to Greece after the junta ended in 1974 and continued to perform in both film and theatre. Over the course of her life she received official recognitions, including the insignia of the Order of the Phoenix in 1995. She also appeared in Portuguese films, working with Manoel de Oliveira in titles such as Anxiety (1997) and A Talking Film (2003), the latter marking her farewell to the screen. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2013 and died in 2022.
