Althea Neale Gibson was an American professional tennis player and golfer who broke racial barriers in international tennis. In the 1950s she became the first Black athlete to win a Grand Slam tournament, capturing the French Championships in 1956; the following year she won Wimbledon and the U.S. national championships, repeating both titles in 1958. Over her career she won 11 Grand Slam titles across singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Known for an aggressive playing style and a powerful serve, Gibson played close to the net to dictate pace and finish points early. Her development included formative years on the American Tennis Association circuit and support from patrons who enabled her access to training and competition until she joined the national American circuit. Beyond her sporting achievements — including induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame — Gibson made a lasting social impact: she also competed as one of the first Black players on the LPGA and is often remembered as a pioneer who paved the way for later generations of Black tennis players.
