Amédy Coulibaly was a Franco-Malian criminal responsible for a series of armed attacks in the Paris region in January 2015. With a history of convictions for armed robbery and involvement in drug trafficking, Coulibaly spent long periods in French prisons, where he reportedly moved closer to radical networks and adopted a militant form of Islam. In 2014 he began to declare loyalty to the self-proclaimed Islamic State and maintained ties with brothers Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, the perpetrators of the attack on the Charlie Hebdo newsroom. On 7–9 January 2015 he carried out separate attacks — including the murder of a municipal police officer in Montrouge and the siege of the kosher supermarket Hypercacher, where he killed four hostages — before being shot dead by police. Investigations indicated prior preparation, seizures of weapons and explosive material at locations associated with him, and contacts with extremist networks that had operated in France. His case highlighted the convergence between common criminality and radicalization in prisons, the role of personal ties in forming cells, and the impact of these attacks on internal security and public debate in France.
