Anand Bakshi was an Indian poet and lyricist whose work shaped the Hindi-language film industry for several decades. He wrote more than 6,000 songs for over 300 films and established himself as the creative voice behind numerous popular hits, collaborating regularly with composers such as Laxmikant–Pyarelal, R. D. Burman and Kalyanji–Anandji. His lyrics crossed generations, were sung by leading vocalists and helped launch the careers of emerging singers and actors. He received four Filmfare Awards for Best Lyricist (1978, 1981, 1995 and 1999) and wrote a string of songs that became landmarks in films such as Aradhana, Bobby, Sholay, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Mohra. Pieces like “Dum Maro Dum” demonstrate his versatility, moving between popular styles, qawwali and romantic melodies. Born into a Punjabi family, Bakshi began writing poetry in his youth and balanced a career in the Navy with attempts to enter the film industry. From the turn of the 1960s he became a leading lyricist in Hindi cinema, leaving a lasting legacy in film music through the breadth, popularity and longevity of his compositions.
