Kim Fowley was an American record producer, entrepreneur, musician, and songwriter, best known for creating and managing the all‑female band The Runaways. During the 1960s and 1970s he became a restless figure on the Los Angeles and London scenes, producing and co‑writing songs for a variety of artists and taking part in projects that scored commercial hits such as “Alley Oop” and “Nut Rocker.”
He worked with influential acts and artists — including Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Murmaids, Soft Machine, Gene Vincent, Warren Zevon, Kiss, and Alice Cooper — and contributed to recordings that later became cult classics. He also released albums as a solo artist and worked as a promoter and consultant, moving among studios, radio, and alternative scenes.
In the early 1970s Fowley conceived and assembled The Runaways, recruiting young musicians such as Joan Jett and Lita Ford; although he produced some of the group’s records, the band asserted broad artistic autonomy and split from him in 1977. His career left a complicated legacy: on one hand he helped launch discoveries and hits; on the other, his later controversies affected his public image.
