Andrea Dworkin was an American intellectual and feminist activist known for her forceful critique of pornography and for theorizing the relationship between pornographic practices and violence against women. The author of influential works such as Pornography: Men Possessing Women (1981) and Intercourse (1987), she became a central figure in the anti‑pornography movement of the 1970s and 1980s, advocating legal approaches that treated pornography as a violation of civil rights in collaboration with Catharine MacKinnon.
Her output included essays, books of political theory and fiction—about ten titles in total—that shaped debates on sexuality, domination and sexual equality. Dworkin’s proposals provoked intense controversy: they were criticized by sex‑positive and liberal feminists, and her legal efforts achieved few practical victories, although they influenced discussions and decisions in some international contexts.
Throughout her career, Dworkin maintained a combative public stance, facing criticism and litigation, and addressed topics such as incest, prostitution and the limits of freedom of expression. Her legacy remains a central reference in theoretical disputes over pornography, sexual power and women’s rights.
