Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was a Soviet nuclear physicist whose career moved from designing thermonuclear weapons to moral leadership in the defense of human rights. In science, he was a central figure in the development of the Soviet thermonuclear weapon, proposing configurations and technical solutions — including ideas that contributed to the Teller–Ulam design and to high‑yield devices — and took part in research on controlled fusion, the tokamak, particle physics and cosmology, with notable contributions such as Sakharov’s conditions for baryon asymmetry.

From the 1950s onward, Sakharov began to question the humanitarian consequences of nuclear testing, publishing papers and warnings about radiocarbon effects and advocating arms control. In the late 1960s and 1970s he became a public voice for political reform in the Soviet Union, denouncing repressions such as the intervention in the Prague Spring and calling for civil rights and democracy.

For his role as a dissident and human‑rights activist he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975. His name also inspired the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize, awarded to defenders of freedom and human rights. Sakharov left an ambivalent legacy: recognized both for major scientific achievements and for his steadfast defense of fundamental liberties.
