Andrés Segovia, first Marquis of Salobreña, was a Spanish guitarist. Considered the father of the modern classical guitar by most music scholars, many said that he "rescued the guitar from the hands of the flamenco gypsies" and built a classical repertoire to secure the instrument's place in concert halls. Many composers wrote works specifically for him, such as Turina, Villa-Lobos, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Pedrell. Pablo Casals was a great admirer and supporter of Segovia.

Segovia had many pupils during his career, including some guitarists now famous such as Steve Hackett, John Williams, Rouland Solarese, Eliot Fisk, Oscar Ghiglia, Charlie Byrd, Christopher Parkening, Michael Lorimer, Michael Chapdelaine, Virginia Luque and Alirio Diaz. Many other guitarists, such as Lily Afshar, were also influenced by the historic master classes.
