Andrew Mark Cuomo is an American lawyer, writer and politician affiliated with the Democratic Party, best known for his three terms as governor of the State of New York (2011–2021). The son of fellow governor Mario Cuomo, he built a public career in municipal and federal posts, including leading the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Clinton administration and serving as New York State Attorney General beginning in 2006. As governor, he advanced prominent items on the state’s progressive agenda: he signed legislation legalizing same‑sex marriage (2011), expanded labor rights and social programs, supported gradual increases in the minimum wage and established paid family leave. He also led initiatives on gun control (the NY SAFE Act, 2013), Medicaid expansion and state climate policies aligned with the Paris Agreement. Cuomo’s administration drew international attention during the COVID‑19 pandemic, receiving early praise for its public briefings and later criticism for a lack of transparency regarding deaths in nursing homes. Near the end of his second term multiple allegations of harassment emerged, prompting investigations and intense political pressure that culminated in his resignation in August 2021. In 2025 he attempted a return to public life by running for mayor of New York City but was unsuccessful in the election.
